Push notifications for Apple mail app in iOS [mailbox.org]

Dear customers of mailbox.org,

We would like to inform you that we will deactivate the service for providing push notifications for Apple Mail iOS via the community-developed tool dovecot-xaps-daemon on Thursday, 26 June 2025.

The reason for this is that the necessary APNs certificates for the alternative XAPS implementation will expire on Friday, 27 June 2025 and will not be renewed by Apple. Without these certificates, it will no longer be technically possible to operate the service.

Email use on Apple devices will of course remain possible - only the push delivery of new messages via the Apple Push Notification System (APNs) will be cancelled. We recommend that affected users adjust the retrieval interval in their mail app (e.g. "every 15 minute") in order to continue to be regularly informed about new emails.

Settings for iOS devices

We very much regret this step, but we have no influence on Apple's decision. Here is a guide for iOS on how to customise mail intervals:

1. click on "Settings".

2. select "Apps".

3. then select the "Mail" app.

4. then navigate to "Mail accounts".

5. then click on "Fetch new data".

6. then click on your mailbox.org account and select "Fetch".

7. set the fetch interval to "every 15 minutes".

Yours sincerely

Your mailbox.org team

Since I could not find a blog/news/social post from Mailbox's URL/handles I am copy-pasting the entire email below (tried my best to retain the formatting).

Also, at least for me push notifications from mailbox.org on iOS have already stopped.

Ohhh so sad about this. I am the original author of the dovecot-xaps-daemon and I wrote it out of frustration that my self hosted email did not get the same nice notifications that iCloud email got.
